Routes and destinations

Sardinia isn't far from anywhere.
It's just awkward to reach on a scheduled flight.

Milan, Nice, London, Geneva, Rome, Ibiza, Chambéry. Here you will find the real times, measured on the actual route and not averages taken from a portal. You will find the European business routes, the summer sea routes, the winter snow routes, long haul — and, at the end, the Sardinian chapter, which is where we learned the trade.

Why Sardinia

A hub in the middle of the Mediterranean,
not a place at the end of the line.

Olbia handles around fifteen thousand business aviation movements a year, more than two hundred a day at the August peak. Anyone who can make it work knows the European market, because for those four months Europe comes through here. Sardinia is where we learned the job — not the limit of where we do it.

Europe, without going near the island

Half the work we do
never touches Sardinia.

Milan–Nice, London–Geneva, Paris–Chambéry, Geneva–Ibiza. These are the routes that really fill Europe's business aviation skies, and they are arranged exactly like the others: same market, same checks on the operator, same open quote. Below are the three families we are asked for most often.

The business routes — all year round

Same-day returns, board meetings, site visits, trade fairs. This is the traffic that knows no season.

The sea routes — May to September

The Balearics, the French Riviera, the Cyclades, the Amalfi Coast. These are the months when aircraft move south and stay there: book early and you find them already in position, and you pay far less for it.

From there you carry on by helicopter. Courchevel, Megève, Val d'Isère, Zermatt, Verbier and Gstaad have no runway that takes jets: the final leg is flown, and the helicopter table shows you how long each one takes.

Beyond Europe

When the route doesn't end at Vienna.

An ultra long range crosses the Atlantic or reaches the Gulf without a stop. These are flights you plan, not improvise: overflight permits, a double crew on the longest legs, customs at both ends. We quote them exactly like any other.

A detail almost nobody mentions. The Falcon 7X and 8X come in under 35 tonnes: they are among the very few ultra long range aircraft allowed into Cannes Mandelieu, where rivals in the same category cannot land. If the route ends there, that changes everything — and both are in the fleet of our partner operators.
Where there's no runway

Twenty-eight places where the jet does not land.
The last leg is by helicopter.

They are among the most sought-after destinations in Europe: some have no airport at all, others have a runway that takes very few aircraft. The booking tool works it out on its own as soon as you type the name: it picks the nearest airport and puts the helicopter into the chain, with the minutes and the cost shown separately.

Porto Cervo

No airport. 10 minutes by helicopter from Olbia, or 35 by car.

Cala di Volpe

Helipad serving the resort. 9 minutes by helicopter from Olbia.

Baja Sardinia

12 minutes by helicopter from Olbia, 40 by car.

Poltu Quatu

Marina. Helicopter or car from Olbia.

La Maddalena

Island. 15 minutes by helicopter from Olbia, or car plus ferry from Palau.

Porto Rafael

15 minutes by helicopter from Olbia.

Cala Gonone

Ogliastra. 25 minutes by helicopter from Olbia, almost 2 hours by car.

Su Gologone

Oliena. 25 minutes by helicopter from Olbia: the only way to get there in comfort.

Capri

Island without an airport. 15 minutes by helicopter from Naples.

Positano

Amalfi Coast. Helicopter from Naples or Salerno.

Ravello

Amalfi Coast. 10 minutes by helicopter from Salerno.

Portofino

10 minutes by helicopter from Genoa, 45 by car.

Cortina d’Ampezzo

No operating airport. Helicopter from Venice or Treviso, or car from Bolzano.

Madonna di Campiglio

Helicopter from Verona or Bolzano.

Panarea

Aeolian Islands. Helicopter from Catania or Palermo.

Ponza

Helicopter from Rome or Naples.

Saint-Tropez

Monaco / Monte Carlo

The Principality has no airport. 7 minutes by helicopter from Nice: the most used link in Europe.

Courchevel

The altiport does not take jets. You land at Chambéry, Geneva or Turin and continue by helicopter.

Megève

20 minutes by helicopter from Geneva.

Val d’Isère

Helicopter from Chambéry or Geneva.

Gstaad

Helicopter from Geneva or Bern. The Saanen altiport takes light aircraft only.

Zermatt

Car-free village. Helicopter from Sion or Geneva.

Verbier

10 minutes by helicopter from Sion.

Formentera

Island without an airport. 10 minutes by helicopter from Ibiza, or by ferry.

Lago di Como

Cernobbio, Bellagio, Tremezzo. 15 minutes by helicopter from Milan Linate, 1 to 2 hours by car depending on traffic.

Forte dei Marmi

Versilia. 12 minutes by helicopter from Pisa, 40–70 by car.

Ischia

Island without an airport. 11 minutes by helicopter from Naples, otherwise ferry or hydrofoil.

You don't need to know it in advance. Type “Porto Cervo”, “Capri” or “Courchevel” into the booking and we'll take care of the rest: which airport, how many minutes of flight, and what that leg costs, shown separately from everything else.
The European airports

Ten airports that decide
half the private flights in Europe.

Each one has a constraint you will not read anywhere until you run into it: a weight limit, a cap on movements, an apron that is full in summer. Here is what we know, said up front.

AirportRunwayWhat it solvesWhat it lacks
Nizza Côte d’AzurLFMN2.960 m Dedicated business terminals and a helipad inside the airport boundary: you step off the jet and onto the helicopter without leaving. Customs always open. In summer it is one of the busiest airports in Europe: capped slots, limited parking, night restrictions.
Cannes MandelieuLFMD1.610 m Fifteen minutes from the Croisette, given over entirely to business aviation. The airport of the Festival and of the congress season. A 35-tonne limit: almost every ultra long range is out, and the Hawker 400XP is excluded on noise grounds. Closed at night.
Saint-Tropez La MôleLFTZ1.071 m Fifteen kilometres from the port: the only way to avoid the main coast road round the gulf in August. A severe landing constraint — about 642 m usable for jets — and approval issued per operator and per individual aircraft. The Citation XLS+ does not get in.
GinevraLSGG3.900 m The gateway to the Alps: permanent customs, every category, and helicopters to Courchevel, Megève, Gstaad and Verbier. During the ski weeks and the days of the Davos forum the apron is full: parking is capped and expensive.
Parigi Le BourgetLFPB2.665 m Europe's leading business airport by movements, ten kilometres from the centre, with several private terminals to choose from. A cap on the number of movements and a night ban: certain departures are impossible at any price.
Londra FarnboroughEGLF2.440 m Business aviation only: from the apron to the car takes minutes, not hours. Customs and border control on site. An annual cap on movements, reduced opening hours at weekends and at night.
Milano LinateLIML2.440 m Inside the city, with a separate private terminal: it is the reason Milan–Olbia and Milan–Nice can be done in a day. A coordinated airport: the slot is assigned by the national coordinator. Night restrictions and a cap on movements.
IbizaLEIB2.800 m Customs and every midsize category; from there the helicopter reaches Formentera in seven minutes. In August the parking is full: the aircraft often drops off and repositions elsewhere, and that flight is paid for by whoever is flying.
Chambéry SavoieLFLB2.020 m The airport for the Tarentaise: Courchevel, Val d'Isère, Méribel. In winter it is the busiest in the Alps. Mountain procedures and a specific crew qualification. The weather closes it, and when it closes there is no negotiating.
SionLSGS2.000 m The Valais, and the high-altitude helicopter bases for Zermatt and Verbier. Costs are far lower than at Geneva. Limited opening hours, basic services, mountain procedures. To be checked case by case.

Runway lengths from public aeronautical documentation, referring to the main runway. Limits, hours and caps change over time: they are there to guide the choice, and we check them on every single flight before quoting.

Sardinia → the rest of the world

Flights leave from here, too.
And in winter more often than you would think.

Half of what you read about private aviation in Sardinia is about the people arriving. But people live here too: they go skiing in January, they have a board meeting in Milan on a Tuesday morning, they take the children to Barcelona for a weekend, and in August they get away to Formentera like everyone else. From Olbia and Cagliari you can fly anywhere: below are the real times, the same ones you read in the inbound tables, read the other way round.

To the snow — December to March

An hour and a quarter from Gallura and you are at Chambéry, and from there the helicopter takes you to Courchevel or Val d'Isère. On scheduled flights the same thing means two connections, a night away and half of Saturday gone: it is why fewer people leave the island in winter than would like to.

For work — and home to sleep in your own bed

It is the reason a Sardinian company uses private aviation: a meeting in Milan at ten, a signature in Rome in the afternoon, and home by the evening. On scheduled flights the same day becomes two days and a night in a hotel — and in winter, when frequencies drop, often not even that is enough.

To the sea, the islands and the cities

From here Corsica is twenty-eight minutes away, Nice fifty-two, Ibiza an hour and twenty. These are the island-to-island routes that scheduled airlines almost never fly: to do them on a scheduled flight you go via the mainland, and you lose the day.

The advantage only the people who live here have. In summer aircraft arrive on the island full and leave empty: that return flight exists anyway, and whoever leaves Sardinia in the right direction pays a fraction of it. It is why a resident with a little flexibility on the date flies at a price you never see from the mainland. Outbound empty legs are the best value in the whole business.

The island's airports

Not just Olbia and Cagliari.

Sardinia has more landing points than most people realise. Some save you a great deal, others cost more than they look: here's the truth about each one.

AirportRunwayWhat it solvesWhat it lacks
Olbia Costa SmeraldaLIEO2.445 m Dedicated private terminal, customs, every category up to ultra long range. It is the gateway to Gallura. Among the highest airport charges in Italy in July and August, with parking capped at peak times.
Cagliari ElmasLIEE2.802 m Open all year, permanent customs, lower costs than Olbia. The reference for the south. Far from the Costa Smeralda: two and a half hours by car, or forty minutes by helicopter.
Alghero FertiliaLIEA3.000 m Long runway, little traffic, excellent for the north-west and the Coral Riviera. More basic ground services; opening hours to be checked out of season.
Tortolì ArbataxLIET1.188 m The shortcut to Ogliastra and the Gulf of Orosei. It saves three hours of mountain road. Short runway: it rules out midsize and above. No night operations, limited services.
Oristano FenosuLIER · closed1.199 m Handy for the central west and the Sinis peninsula. Practically deserted, and therefore very quick. Services activated on request, with notice. Light aircraft only.
Airfieldsvarious500–780 m Almost no charges, and close to areas that are otherwise awkward to reach. Often no customs, no Jet A-1, no adequate fire cover and no night operations. We only propose them when they really pay off, and we tell you why.
